Traffic Situation

Slavonia and Baranja is located in the northeast of Croatia extending over 12,500 sq. km area, which makes 22% of the entire Croatian continental territory. It is bordered by rivers of international significance from three sides: Drava, Sava and Dunav. This area has a very favorable geographic and traffic position in the broad environment, primarily in relation to the main European routes.

The most important road communications passing through the region are D-4 (highway), D-2 (Podravska Magistrala) and D-7 (Beli Manastir - Osijek - Slavonski Samac). This area is connected with road communications in the north-south direction: Hungarian border - Beli Manastir - Osijek - Ploce. On that route, an important role in linking of Slavonia and Baranja will be played by the future TEM \“Baltic-Adriatic\” highway, V corridor with the VC arm Budapest - Beli Manastir - Osijek - Sarajevo – Ploce.

This route is denoted E-73 within the AGR system of main European roads. It lies within the Pan-European VC corridor and it is one of the most important branches of the TEM/TER project and the unavoidable route of future combined transport shipments, especially with regard to the Vukovar - Samac Channel potential. Road route D-4 (E-70), corridor X, peripherally affects the area of Slavonia and Baranja.

The primary corridors of railroad traffic:
- Sredisce - Cakovec - Varazdin - Koprivnica - Osijek - Dalj – Erdut
- Beli Manastir - Osijek - Strizivojna/Vrpolje

Inland waterways of the Republic of Croatia are integrated in the European Network of Waterways VII (Danube) corridor, through signing of the multiparty European contract on main inland waterways of international significance (AGN- UN/ECE/ITC). International waterways of RC are thus:
E - 80 – River Danube
E - 80 - 08 – River Drava from its estuary to Osijek - 22 km E - 80 - 10 - Danube – Sava Channel
E - 80 - 12 - River Sava to Sisak with a part of River Kupa (5 km)
River ports Osijek, Vukovar and Sisak are included in the network of ports for international traffic. Piers for passenger ships have been built in Batina and Aljmaš.

The Osijek - Klisa Airport is equipped for handling of all types of aircraft and, currently only during the tourist season, carrier Croatia Airlines maintains two services toward destinations on the Adriatic, (Osijek - Split - Osijek, Osijek - Dubrovnik - Osijek).
